Website Maintenance and Management for Live Sites

I look after websites once they are live: updates, backups, security, uptime checks, speed, content edits, hosting and migrations. I maintain sites on WordPress, Shopify, site builders and custom code, and many of them are sites I built and still manage for the businesses that own them.

What is included

  • Core, theme and plugin updates: WordPress core, themes, plugins and Shopify apps kept current on a schedule, with complex updates tested before they reach the live site.
  • Regular off-site backups: Regular backups of files and database stored away from your server, with restores tested so a backup is something you can actually use.
  • Security monitoring and hardening: Fewer and better plugins, least-privilege user accounts, two-factor login, firewall rules and prompt patching when a vulnerability is announced.
  • Uptime and form checks: Your site is watched for downtime, and key paths like quote forms, booking buttons and checkout are checked after changes.
  • Speed and Core Web Vitals: Ongoing work on heavy images, bloated scripts, caching and PHP versions, so the site stays quick as content grows.
  • Content edits and new pages: Text, prices, opening hours, staff, photos, promotions, products and new service pages updated for you.
  • Hosting, domains and DNS: Support across cPanel hosting, AWS, Azure and Cloudflare, and registrars such as GoDaddy, Namecheap, Hostinger and IONOS.
  • Migrations and rebuilds: Moves between hosts and between platforms, including WordPress to Shopify, with redirects mapped to protect search traffic.

What does website maintenance include?

Website maintenance is the ongoing work that keeps a live site secure, fast, backed up and accurate after launch. My maintenance covers updates, backups, security monitoring, uptime checks, speed fixes and content changes, plus hosting support and migrations when they come up.

A website is not finished on launch day. Plugins release updates, PHP versions reach end of life, browsers change how they render pages, and your business changes its services, prices, staff and opening hours. Each of those needs action, or it quietly turns into risk.

Maintenance is the biggest single thread through my portfolio. Of my 215 case studies, 157 are tagged Website Maintenance, and on 44 my role is listed as Developer and Site Manager, meaning I built the site and still run it. Freshwater Paws, a dog grooming and daycare business on Sydney's Northern Beaches, is one of those: a Breakdance site I keep updated, backed up and clean. 191 Automotive, a mechanical workshop in Moorabbin, trusts me with its entire web presence, from updates to backups to security.

Ongoing maintenance is a separate monthly plan from a build, so you can start one whether I built your site or someone else did.

Who needs a website maintenance plan?

A maintenance plan suits any business whose website brings in calls, bookings, orders or enquiries, run by an owner who would rather not manage updates and hosting personally. If your site going down for a day would cost you work, it needs someone watching it.

Most of the sites I maintain belong to small and medium businesses: automotive workshops, trades, construction and remodeling firms, clinics, fitness studios, hospitality venues, wholesalers and online stores. A few examples from my case studies:

It also suits agencies that need a reliable developer to look after client sites in the background. The CJ Digital agency site, a Melbourne studio's own WordPress and Breakdance build, is one I maintain and keep secure.

Which platforms do you maintain?

I maintain live websites on whatever platform they are built on: WordPress, Shopify, site builders, or custom codebases such as React, Next.js, Laravel and PHP.

WordPress makes up most of it. 171 of my case studies are WordPress builds, with Breakdance in 124 project stacks alongside Elementor, Divi, WPBakery and custom themes. WooCommerce stores such as ABC Diesels, Tranquil Blooms and Taylor Made Memorabilia add the extra care that checkout, payment plugins and stock data need.

On Shopify, the platform handles core updates, so maintenance means theme code, apps, metafields and catalogue changes. Outdoor eStore, Frog Dive and Illusion Fires are Shopify stores with custom Liquid that carry a Website Maintenance tag in my portfolio.

Hand-coded sites are covered too. JAF Autos and LA Property Law are HTML, CSS and JavaScript builds I made and still maintain. Site builders such as Webflow and HubSpot are familiar ground, since I have built on both. For custom applications, maintenance extends to dependency updates, server patches and database care.

Taking over a site someone else built is routine. Every takeover starts with an audit, so you know the condition of the site before I change anything.

How do you keep a website secure?

I keep sites secure through a routine rather than a single security plugin. Plugins account for most new WordPress vulnerabilities, so that is where the routine starts.

  • Run fewer, well-maintained plugins and delete the ones nobody uses
  • Apply simple updates promptly and test complex ones on a staging copy first
  • Patch the server as well, including PHP versions, when a flaw is announced
  • Give every user the lowest access they need and turn on two-factor login
  • Use firewall and bot rules, often through Cloudflare, and Google reCAPTCHA on forms
  • Keep tested off-site backups so recovery is possible if something does go wrong

When a serious flaw is published, such as the PHP2Shell vulnerabilities patched in October 2026, it is treated as urgent rather than left for the next scheduled round.

Security is part of the brief on many of my maintenance sites. First Choice Bollards, Page Doors and EAI Security sell security products and services, so their own websites have to be locked down. Weatherall Windows, Aspect Flooring and Asia Summit Consulting are other WordPress and Breakdance sites I keep fast, secure and online.

How do backups and uptime monitoring work?

Backups and uptime monitoring are the two safety nets that matter most when something breaks. Backups let me restore a working version of your site, and monitoring tells me the site has a problem so I can act on it quickly.

Backups

I keep regular backups of files and the database stored away from your hosting account, so a server failure does not take the backups down with it. A fresh backup is taken before every significant update, and restores are tested, because a backup that has never been restored is only a hope.

Uptime and form checks

Sites I maintain are checked for downtime, and key paths such as contact forms, booking buttons and checkout are checked after updates. A site can be online while its quote form silently fails, which costs an enquiry-driven business just as much.

24 Hour Melbourne Plumbers shows why this matters. An emergency plumber takes calls at 2am, so the WordPress and Divi site is maintained and monitored around the clock to keep the booking button working.

How often backups run and what gets monitored depends on how often your site changes. A busy WooCommerce store needs more frequent backups than a brochure site that changes twice a year, and that is set in your plan.

Can you handle content edits and small changes?

Yes. Content changes are a normal part of maintenance: updating text, prices and opening hours, adding staff, swapping photos, publishing new service pages, running promotions or changing products on a store. You send what needs changing, I make the change and confirm when it is live.

Small changes add up. A service business that starts covering a new area should have a page for it. A store that changes its shipping rules needs those reflected in the theme and the policies. A clinic that hires a new practitioner needs them on the team page and in the booking path. None of these is a big job, but left undone they make a site drift out of date, and visitors notice.

Because I build sites as well as maintain them, edits can go further than a page builder allows. If a change needs a new section layout, a custom field, a form adjustment or a small piece of functionality, I can build it rather than work around it.

Knight Business Services, an accounting and advisory practice, is a WordPress and Breakdance site where I handle updates and security. Luke's Banh Mi is a multi-location food brand whose site ties together locations, catering, rewards and online ordering.

Do you help with hosting, domains and migrations?

Yes. I work across hosting and domain providers including cPanel hosting, AWS, Azure, Docker, Cloudflare, Hostinger, GoDaddy, Crazy Domains, Namecheap, IONOS, Porkbun, Z.com, domain.com and Spaceship. That covers moving a site to better hosting, sorting out DNS settings and putting Cloudflare in front of a site for caching and protection.

Migrations are where websites most often lose search traffic, usually through missing redirects or changed URLs. When I move a site, I map old URLs to new ones, carry over page titles and metadata, test forms and checkout, and watch Search Console afterwards for crawl errors.

Migration work from my case studies:

  • IVE Data-Driven: a WordPress and Elementor corporate site where the work focused on maintenance, a hosting migration and a stable content experience
  • Real Mad Honey: a full move from WordPress to a custom Shopify Plus build
  • Sourcefit: a WordPress, Elementor and Salesforce website ecosystem hosted on Azure, which I maintained and expanded

If your current host is slow, unreliable or hard to deal with, moving can be one of the simplest ways to improve speed and reliability. I check whether the host is the real bottleneck before recommending a move.

How do you keep a maintained site fast?

I keep sites fast by treating speed as ongoing work, not a launch task. Sites slow down over time as plugins, tracking scripts, sliders, large images and chat widgets pile up, so each maintenance round looks at what has been added and what it costs in load time.

Speed work on a maintained site usually means compressing and resizing new images, clearing out unused plugins and scripts, tuning caching through LiteSpeed Cache or Cloudflare, keeping PHP on a current version, and reading Core Web Vitals from real visitor data in Search Console. When a new feature is requested, I look for the lightest way to add it rather than installing another heavy plugin.

Performance work runs through my portfolio, from a lean, fast site for JAF Autos in Hoppers Crossing to automotive builds like Volkwerke, Transfixed Automatics and Top Drop Automotive, which all carry a Performance Optimization tag.

A site that starts lean is easier to keep lean. When I maintain a site I also built, the structure is already light, which keeps the ongoing work smaller and the plan simpler.

What affects the cost of website maintenance?

The cost of maintenance depends on how much there is to look after and how often it changes. I quote it as a monthly plan once I have audited the site for free or we have had a short call, so the price reflects your actual site rather than a generic tier.

The main factors:

  • Platform and complexity: a five-page brochure site is simpler than a WooCommerce store or a Shopify catalogue with apps and custom code
  • The number of plugins, apps and integrations to keep updated and tested
  • How often you need content changes or new pages
  • Hosting arrangements, and whether I manage the server or work within your host's tools
  • Security needs, such as stores taking payments or sites holding customer data
  • The condition of the site when I take it over

If the takeover audit finds problems such as outdated software, broken forms or a slow host, those can be handled as a one-off fix first, so the monthly plan starts from a clean base. Budget options on the contact form start under $499 and go up to $2,000-$2,999, and the "Let's discuss" option suits ongoing arrangements.

How do you report on maintenance and measure success?

You get written updates that say what was done, what was found and what needs your decision. Maintenance is mostly invisible when it goes well, so reporting is how you know it is happening.

An update covers the updates applied, backups taken, any security or uptime events, speed checks, content changes completed and anything I recommend fixing next. If an update breaks something, you hear about it together with what I did to roll it back or repair it.

Success in maintenance is measured by what does not go wrong: no long outages, no compromised pages, forms that keep delivering enquiries, and a site that stays in step with your business. Where tracking is set up, I also watch Search Console for crawl errors and Core Web Vitals, so search performance does not slip after an update without anyone noticing.

Over time, the updates also build a record of the site's history: what was installed, when it changed and why. That record is useful if you ever bring in another developer, change hosts or plan a redesign.

Who owns the site and accounts while you maintain it?

You do. In general terms, your website, content, domain and hosting belong to your business, and I work on them through access you grant. I recommend keeping the domain registrar, hosting account, Google accounts and any paid plugin or app licences in your business name, with me added as a user rather than holding the keys myself.

That arrangement protects you. If you ever change developers, you remove my access and nothing breaks. It also makes takeovers cleaner: when a previous developer held the logins, recovering those accounts into your name is one of my first jobs.

Clear access matters even more when the work is remote. I work from Botolan, Zambales, on UTC+8, so Australian clients get changes during their own business day, while clients in the US, UK and Europe often have updates done overnight, outside their busiest hours, with a written note waiting in the morning. AJMG Ltd, the consultancy site of a UK flex office specialist, is a WordPress build I maintain from the other side of the world.

The specific terms of each plan, including access and handover, are set out in writing before work begins.

How the work runs

  1. Audit: I review software versions, plugins, hosting, backups, security and speed, and show you what needs fixing before anything changes.
  2. Stabilise: Urgent issues come first: outdated software, broken forms, missing backups and security gaps.
  3. Maintain: Updates, backups, monitoring, speed checks and content edits run on an agreed monthly schedule.
  4. Report: You get written updates on what was done, what was found and what I recommend next.

Website Maintenance questions

Can you maintain a website you did not build?

Yes. I take over sites on WordPress, Shopify, site builders and custom codebases such as React, Next.js, Laravel and PHP. Every takeover starts with an audit, so you know the condition of the site before anything is changed.

How often do you update plugins and themes?

On a regular schedule agreed in your plan, with urgent security patches handled outside that schedule. Simple updates go live after a fresh backup, while page builders, WooCommerce and other complex plugins are tested on a staging copy first.

Is website maintenance a monthly plan?

Yes. Ongoing maintenance is a separate monthly plan from a website build, quoted on the size and complexity of your site. One-off jobs such as a migration or a cleanup can also be quoted on their own.

What happens if my site gets hacked or goes down?

I restore it from a clean backup, find out how it happened, close the gap and tell you in writing what was done. Tested off-site backups and current software are what make that recovery straightforward, which is why both are central to how I maintain sites.

Do you maintain Shopify stores?

Yes. Shopify handles platform updates, so store maintenance focuses on theme code, apps, metafields, product data and speed. Examples in my case studies include Carlton Audio Visual, WSG Waterproofing Solutions and MiLi Store Australia.

Can you move my site to new hosting?

Yes. I handle hosting moves and platform migrations, mapping redirects, testing forms and checkout, and checking Search Console afterwards. IVE Data-Driven is one case study centred on maintenance and a hosting migration.
