The Challenge

Abracadabra Fancy Dress is a much-loved costume shop on Playne Street in Frankston that has served Melbourne communities for almost 40 years, with one of Victoria's most extensive costume ranges for men, women and children. The Abracadabra Fancy Dress WooCommerce store had to bring that range online and keep it running through the busiest times of the year.

Costume retail is brutally seasonal. Traffic and orders spike around Halloween and Book Week, when parents, partygoers and schools all shop at once, often at the last minute. A slow page, a broken checkout or a security problem at that moment would cost the business its biggest sales weeks.

The store also had to manage two different business models side by side: costumes for sale online and costumes for hire in store. Add accessories, balloons and party decorations, and the catalogue needed careful organisation so shoppers could find the right outfit without getting lost.

The Solution

I built the shop on WordPress with WooCommerce and organised hundreds of products into categories people actually browse. The main navigation separates the business clearly: Home, Online Costume Shop, Costumes for Hire, Balloons, Gallery, About and Contact, with a cart icon always visible in the header.

The homepage opens with three tiles, Costume Hire, Costume Shop and Balloons, so visitors pick their path immediately. A Most Popular Costumes section showcases favourites like Jack Sparrow, Darth Vader, devils and Cinderella, and a Melbourne's Best Costume Shop introduction explains the store's history and range.

Costumes are organised by theme and size for adults and children, with accessories including wigs, masks, face paint, special effects makeup and props. The online store ships Australia-wide. I keep the store maintained year round, with updates, backups and security running quietly in the background, and it has never been hacked, even through peak season.

About Abracadabra Fancy Dress, Frankston's costume shop

Abracadabra Fancy Dress has dressed Melbourne for almost four decades. The Frankston store sells and hires costumes, stocks accessories for every theme imaginable and offers professional balloon decor for events of all sizes.

Its customers are wonderfully varied: parents racing to find a Book Week outfit, adults heading to a themed party, schools and workplaces planning events, and families decorating for celebrations. Many are local and visit the store to try on hire costumes, while others shop online from anywhere in Australia.

The website needed to capture the fun and generosity of the shop while staying practical. Customer testimonials, a Customer Gallery and an Instagram Gallery show real people in Abracadabra costumes, which adds personality and proof that the range delivers on the day.

Organising hundreds of costumes into categories people browse

With hundreds of products, structure is everything. I organised the WooCommerce catalogue around the way people actually shop for costumes: by theme, by size, and by who the costume is for. Adults and children have their own paths, and themes group related outfits so a shopper looking for pirates, superheroes or fairy tales sees all the options together.

Accessories have their own categories too, including wigs, masks, face paint, special effects makeup, and costume props and weapons. Linking accessories to related costumes encourages shoppers to complete the look in one order.

Clear category names, consistent product titles and good product photography make browsing quick on mobile. A shopper with a party on Saturday should be able to find, choose and buy a costume in a few minutes.

Separating costume hire, online sales and balloon decor

Abracadabra runs three distinct services, and the website keeps them clearly apart. The Online Costume Shop is a full WooCommerce store with a cart and checkout, built for customers who want to buy and keep their costume.

Costumes for Hire is a separate section, because hire works differently. Customers browse the range online, then visit the Frankston store to try on and collect, so the hire pages focus on inspiration and store details rather than online checkout.

Balloons has its own section for event decor. Separating the three prevents confusion, such as someone trying to buy a hire costume, and it lets each section speak to its own customer. Trading hours, a Retail Returns Policy page and Call Us Now buttons support all three.

Surviving Halloween and Book Week traffic spikes

Peak season is when the Abracadabra Fancy Dress WooCommerce store earns its keep, so performance work focuses on those weeks. Product images are optimised and unnecessary scripts are kept off the page, so the store stays quick when traffic surges.

Updates are planned around the seasonal calendar, so nothing unexpected changes in the middle of the Halloween rush. Backups run before and after major changes, so the store can be restored quickly if anything goes wrong.

SEO supports seasonal demand too. Category pages for popular themes give shoppers searching for specific costumes a direct landing page. If you are weighing up platforms for a similar store, my comparison of Shopify vs WordPress and WooCommerce covers the trade-offs.

Year-round WooCommerce maintenance and security

An ecommerce store handles customer data and payments, so security is critical. I maintain the Abracadabra site year round: WordPress core, WooCommerce and plugin updates, scheduled backups of files and the MySQL database, security hardening and 24/7 uptime monitoring.

The results are 99.9% uptime, zero security incidents and every page loading clean, including through the busiest Halloween and Book Week seasons.
