The Challenge

Outdoor eStore is an Australian specialist in camping, hiking, climbing and abseiling gear, carrying brands such as Petzl, MSR, GSI, BlueWater, Therm-a-Rest, Platypus and Sealline, plus one of the largest ranges of spare parts in the country. Keeping the Outdoor eStore Shopify store fast and easy to shop is as much a merchandising problem as a technical one.

The catalogue is huge and deep. A shopper might drill from Camping & Hiking into Camp Kitchen, then Cookware, then a specific titanium or cast iron range, while a climber heads for harnesses, karabiners or dynamic rope. Every level needs to load quickly and make sense.

On top of that, the store runs detailed offers: a flat $8.95 shipping rate under $50, free shipping over $50 in Australia with crash mats excluded, weekly deals, clearance banners and special-order gear with lead times. All of it has to work alongside Swym wishlist integration without slowing the theme down.

The Solution

The store runs on Shopify with custom Liquid work throughout, and I maintain it on an ongoing basis. My focus is on the parts of the theme that make a high-SKU outdoor store work: merchandising, navigation, collections and store health.

Key pieces include:

  • Custom Liquid sections for the announcement bar and shipping offers, including the crash mat exception to free shipping
  • Swym wishlist integration, so shoppers can save gear while they research
  • Tailored collection templates for deep category trees across camping, climbing, snow, travel and water sports
  • Homepage merchandising rows for sale banners, new or back-in-stock products, limited stock and special-order gear

Behind the scenes, I maintain the theme, apps and overall store health continuously. Updates are tested so promotions, wishlists and Quick View keep working, and performance is checked so new features never undo the speed work. The key results show where that leaves the store: 99.9% storefront uptime, 0 checkout incidents, a sub-one-second homepage load target and 100% mobile-friendly templates.

Australian camping, climbing and outdoor gear catalogue

Outdoor eStore is run by a small team of experienced outdoor enthusiasts who want customers to have a safe, comfortable adventure. The site reflects that with a catalogue built for people who know what they need.

The main navigation covers Camping & Hiking, Climbing & Abseiling, Snow & Ice, Travel & Urban, Sports and Sale, each with deep sub-categories. Climbing alone breaks down into harnesses, helmets, hardware such as belay devices and karabiners, dynamic and static rope, slings and canyoning gear. Camping covers camp kitchen, sleep systems, tents and shelters, lighting and trekking poles.

Supporting this depth are dedicated entry points such as Shop By Brand, Weekly Deals, a spare parts range and a link to the New Zealand store, so returning customers can go straight to what they want.

Custom Liquid sections for shipping offers and promotions

Shipping rules are a big part of how Outdoor eStore sells. The announcement bar explains them up front: fast order processing, $8.95 shipping on orders under $50, and free shipping on orders over $50 in Australia, excluding crash mats. Getting that exception right matters, because bulky climbing crash mats cost far more to ship than a headlamp or a stuff sack.

Custom Liquid sections handle these messages and the homepage promotions around them, such as seasonal sales on bottles, discounts on tents and half-price cookware sets. Each section is editable in the theme editor, so the team can change offers without code.

Further down, merchandising rows highlight new or back-in-stock products, limited stock bargains and gear that can be special ordered, with lead times clearly flagged.

Swym wishlist integration and tailored collection templates

Outdoor gear is often a researched purchase. Climbers compare harnesses, hikers weigh up sleeping mats, and many shoppers come back several times before buying. Swym wishlist integration lets them save items and return later, and I keep that integration working cleanly with the theme through updates.

Collection templates are tailored for a deep catalogue. Product grids support Quick View and add to cart, variant details such as rope length or stuff sack size are visible early, and sale prices are clear. The homepage also features a Harness Selector that helps climbers choose the right harness, alongside a direct path to spare parts.

These tools keep thousands of products browsable without overwhelming shoppers, which is the core job of any large outdoor store.

Speed and SEO for the Outdoor eStore Shopify store

A deep catalogue with wishlists, promotions and product rows can easily become slow. I keep the store working toward a sub-one-second homepage load target by keeping a close eye on what each app and section adds to the page. My Shopify speed optimization checklist covers the techniques I use.

Every template is mobile-friendly, which matters for shoppers checking gear on the go. On the SEO side, the structured collection tree, brand pages and descriptive category names give search engines a clear map of the range.

The store's blog adds useful content too, from new product announcements to safety notices such as product recalls. That kind of helpful, timely content builds trust with customers and gives search engines more reasons to rank the site.

Ongoing Shopify maintenance for Outdoor eStore

Maintenance is where a store like this stays healthy. I look after the theme, apps and store health on a continuous basis, testing changes before they go live so promotions, wishlists and checkout keep working. The results so far are 99.9% storefront uptime and 0 checkout incidents.

This lets the Outdoor eStore team focus on what they do best: sourcing gear, answering stock questions and shipping orders fast. For another Australian Shopify store with a deep, specialist catalogue, see Frog Dive.
