Shopify Development for Stores That Outgrow Their Theme

I build and extend Shopify and Shopify Plus stores with custom Liquid, metafields and the Storefront API, for brands that need more than a stock theme and a stack of apps. My Shopify work spans car audio retailers in California, specialty stores across Australia and a full Shopify Plus migration from WordPress.

What is included

  • Custom Liquid themes and sections: Themes written in Liquid from scratch, or new sections added to the theme you already run, so your team can rearrange layouts in the theme editor.
  • Metafields for product data: Specs, sizing, compatibility and other product detail modeled as metafields, so every product page shows the same fields in the same place.
  • App-free restock alerts: Back-in-stock alerts by email and SMS through Klaviyo, Brevo and Cloudflare Workers, without paying for a separate alert app.
  • Storefront API integrations: Custom logic that runs outside the theme, connected through the Storefront API and REST API, like the Cloudflare layer behind Car Audio Garage.
  • Migrations and product importation: Moves into Shopify from WordPress and other platforms, like Real Mad Honey's move to Shopify Plus, with product importation and URL redirects planned up front.
  • AI listing agents: Background AI agents that turn manufacturer data into metafield-ready product listings for catalogs too large to enter by hand.
  • Conversion and A/B testing: Product page, collection and cart changes structured so they can be tested, including the A/B testing setup on Real Mad Honey.
  • Live store maintenance: Theme fixes, new sections and seasonal changes for running stores, as I provide for Outdoor eStore, Frog Dive and other Australian retailers.

What does a Shopify developer build for your store?

I build the parts of a Shopify store that a stock theme and a pile of apps cannot handle cleanly. That usually means custom Liquid sections, product pages driven by metafields, integrations through the Storefront API and REST API, and background automation that takes repetitive catalog work off your team.

A typical engagement covers some or all of these:

  • Custom themes written in Liquid, or new sections added to the theme you already run
  • Metafield structures for specs, sizing, compatibility and other product detail
  • Email and SMS flows through Klaviyo or Brevo, including back-in-stock alerts
  • Storefront API and Cloudflare Workers layers for features that sit outside the theme
  • Migrations and product importation from WordPress and other platforms
  • Speed, technical SEO and tracking fixes on live stores

My portfolio holds 17 Shopify and Shopify Plus stores, from single-product brands to a retailer carrying more than 900 products. Whatever the size, the aim is a store your team can run day to day without calling a developer for every small change.

Which stores need custom Shopify development?

Custom work makes sense when your products or buyers do not fit a standard template. The stores I build for tend to share one of these problems:

If your store already sells simple products well on its current theme, you may only need a few targeted fixes. An audit shows that before you commit to a rebuild.

Shopify, Shopify Plus or WooCommerce: which fits your business?

Shopify usually fits product-led brands that want hosting, security and platform updates handled for a monthly fee. WooCommerce fits businesses that want the store inside a content-heavy WordPress site, need custom B2B logic, or want full control of the code and server. I build on both, with 17 Shopify case studies and 12 WooCommerce stores in my portfolio, so I have no reason to push one over the other.

Shopify Plus is the step up for brands that have outgrown a standard plan. Real Mad Honey moved from WordPress to a fully custom Shopify Plus build so it could run A/B tests, integrate more freely across the Shopify ecosystem and give a premium product a cleaner storefront.

When you compare options, look at three-year total cost rather than launch cost alone. On Shopify that means the plan plus every app subscription, and on WooCommerce it means hosting, plugin licenses and maintenance. I walk through those numbers with you and recommend the platform that fits your products, budget and team.

How do Liquid, metafields and the Storefront API work together?

Liquid is Shopify's template language, metafields hold the extra data your products need, and the Storefront API lets code outside the theme read and act on store data. Together they let a store show exactly the right information without hard-coding it page by page.

Liquid

Liquid controls how every page renders. I write custom sections and blocks that your team can rearrange in the theme editor, as on Organ Boost, a fully custom Liquid build with custom-coded sections and flexible site management.

Metafields

Metafields store structured details such as power ratings, dimensions, materials or course dates. On Musway USA, custom metafields carry deep technical specs so each product page presents them in a consistent format.

Storefront API

The Storefront API connects the store to outside services. For Car Audio Garage, I built a Cloudflare and Storefront API layer that runs beside the theme, and on Musway USA, Cloudflare also powers the app-free restock alerts.

The result is a store where product data lives in one place and the theme simply displays it.

Can custom code replace paid Shopify apps?

Often, yes, for focused features you pay for every month. Back-in-stock alerts are a good example: for Car Audio Garage and Musway USA I built app-free restock alerts by email and SMS, using Klaviyo, Brevo and Cloudflare Workers instead of a dedicated alert app.

Replacing an app with custom code makes sense when:

  • The app loads scripts on every page but you only use one small feature
  • The monthly fee climbs with your order volume or subscriber count
  • You need the feature to behave in a way the app settings do not allow
  • Several apps overlap and conflict with each other

It does not always make sense. Well-supported apps for reviews, wishlists or subscriptions can be the right call, and Outdoor eStore runs Swym for wishlists alongside its custom Liquid work. Slow Shopify stores usually suffer from their theme and app stack rather than the platform itself, so trimming unused apps is one of the first things I check. You get a straight list of what to keep, what to replace and what to remove.

How does a migration to Shopify work?

A migration moves your products, customers, content and URLs into Shopify while a new storefront is built around them, so the switch happens in one planned step. I handled this for Real Mad Honey, which moved from WordPress to a fully custom Shopify Plus build.

The work runs in this order:

  • Audit the current site: products, variants, content, apps and every URL that receives search traffic
  • Map the data model, deciding what becomes a product, variant, metafield, collection or page
  • Import products and content, then check them against the old site
  • Build the theme on an unpublished copy so the live site keeps selling
  • Set up redirects from old URLs to their new Shopify paths
  • Test checkout, emails, tracking and integrations, then launch

Tracking deserves extra care right now. Shopify stops injecting script tags into storefronts on March 1, 2027, so a migration is a good moment to move analytics and ad tracking to Shopify web pixels instead of copying old scripts across. I also handle moves in the other direction, from Shopify to WordPress, when that suits the business better.

What does the Shopify build process look like, and how long is it?

Every Shopify project starts with a short brief and ends with a store your team can run, and the timeline depends on scope. A handful of new sections is a short job, while a custom theme, a migration or an integration layer takes longer. Before any code is written, you receive a milestone plan with dates.

The usual flow:

  • You send goals, budget range and deadline through the contact form
  • I review the store or the old site and come back with questions or a proposal
  • We agree on scope, timeline and a fixed quote before the build begins
  • I build on an unpublished theme and send written progress updates
  • You review on real devices, I fix what comes up, and we launch

Larger builds are split into milestones, so you can review the product page, collection pages and cart before the rest of the store is finished. After launch I can stay on for fixes, new sections and seasonal changes, which is how I already work with several Australian stores.

What affects the cost of a Shopify build?

Cost follows scope, so the quickest way to a real number is a free audit or a short call. There is no public price list, since two stores with the same number of pages can need very different amounts of work. The budget field on my contact form runs from under $499 up to $2,000-$2,999, with a "Let's Discuss" option for bigger builds, and every project gets a fixed quote once the scope is agreed.

The main cost drivers are:

  • Whether the theme is built from scratch, as with Wello World, or extended
  • How many custom sections and templates the store needs
  • How much product data must be modeled in metafields and imported
  • Integrations such as Klaviyo, Brevo, SMS or a Cloudflare Workers layer
  • Migration size, including products, customers, content and redirects
  • Automation such as AI agents that build product listings

App costs matter too. A custom feature is a one-time build, while an app charges every month for as long as you use it, so the cheaper option over two or three years is not always the obvious one.

Which numbers show that a Shopify store is doing its job?

Success is measured against the goal set at the start, using numbers you can check yourself. For most stores that means conversion rate, add-to-cart rate, revenue per visitor and the share of sessions that reach a product page. For a store with restock alerts, alert signups and the orders that follow them are worth tracking too.

Speed is measured in Shopify's Web Performance dashboard against the Core Web Vitals. The targets I build toward are:

  • Largest Contentful Paint of 2.5 seconds or less
  • Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less
  • Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less

Search performance comes from Google Search Console, with clicks, impressions and indexed pages checked after launch and after major changes. Tracking runs through Shopify web pixels, so analytics and ad platforms keep reporting after the script tag deprecation.

I do not promise a specific sales figure, because results depend on your products, pricing and traffic as much as on the build. What I do is make the store fast, measurable and easy to test, as with the A/B testing setup on Real Mad Honey.

Is a custom store ready for Google and AI shopping assistants?

Yes. Every store I build launches with the technical basics covered, including product schema markup, meta titles and descriptions, a logical heading order, an XML sitemap, fast Core Web Vitals and templates designed for phones first. Wello World, Yaqeen Books and Sttoke were each built with a stronger SEO structure as a core goal.

AI shopping is the newer layer. Agentic commerce on Shopify lets assistants such as ChatGPT, Copilot and Google AI Mode find and compare a store's products, and sometimes complete the purchase, through Shopify Catalog and the Agentic Storefronts channel. Those assistants depend on clean, structured product data, which is exactly what well-planned metafields provide.

To make a store easy for search engines and AI assistants to read, I focus on:

  • Complete product titles, descriptions and specs stored as structured fields
  • Accurate product schema with price, availability and variants
  • Collection pages with real descriptive content
  • Fast, accessible templates that crawlers and browser agents can parse

After launch, I can keep working on content, local visibility and the store's presence in AI answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews as an ongoing service.

Who owns the theme, code and data?

You do. The store, its products, customers and orders live in your Shopify account, and any theme I build or edit is installed there rather than hosted somewhere you cannot reach. Supporting services, such as Cloudflare Workers or Klaviyo and Brevo flows, are set up for your business so they keep running if we stop working together.

In practice that means:

  • You keep owner access and add me as a collaborator or staff account
  • Theme code stays in your store, with earlier versions kept as backups
  • Integration accounts sit under your business, not my personal login
  • Custom logic is written to be readable by the next developer, not hidden in a private tool only I control

The same applies to AI listing agents and other automation. They work on your data, and their output lands in your store as normal products and metafields. If you bring the work in-house or hire another developer later, they inherit a store built on standard Shopify features plus clearly separated custom code.

Can a Shopify developer in the Philippines cover US and Australian hours?

Yes. I work remotely from Botolan, Zambales, on Philippine time (UTC+8), which overlaps the full Australian business day and gives US and European clients overnight progress with written updates. My Shopify clients include Car Audio Garage in Temecula and Musway USA in Murrieta, California, along with Australian stores such as Outdoor eStore, Frog Dive, Illusion Fires, Carlton Audio Visual and WSG Waterproofing Solutions.

Remote work runs on clear writing. You get:

  • A written scope and milestone plan before the build begins
  • Regular progress updates with links to preview themes
  • Questions grouped together so you can answer them in one sitting
  • Short calls in an overlap window when a topic needs discussion

For US stores, the overnight schedule means you review changes at the start of your day and send feedback before you log off. For Australian stores, we share most of the working day, which suits launches and urgent fixes.

I bring more than 8 years of experience, including time as a full-stack Shopify developer at Web Medic from 2020 to 2024.

How the work runs

  1. Store audit: I review your theme, apps, product data and goals, then send a fixed quote with scope and milestones.
  2. Data model: I plan metafields, collections and integrations so every piece of product data has a clear home before template work starts.
  3. Build and test: I build on an unpublished theme, test on real devices and through checkout, and report progress in writing.
  4. Launch and tune: I publish the store, confirm speed and tracking, and keep refining sections and features after go-live.

Shopify Development questions

Do you build Shopify themes from scratch or edit existing ones?

Both. Wello World and Organ Boost were custom Liquid builds from the ground up, and I also add sections and features to existing themes when the code underneath is sound. I decide after reviewing your theme, apps and goals.

Can you migrate my store from WordPress to Shopify?

Yes. Real Mad Honey moved from WordPress to a fully custom Shopify Plus build, and I plan products, content, URLs and tracking before anything moves. I also migrate stores from Shopify to WordPress when WooCommerce suits the business better.

Do you work on Shopify Plus stores?

Yes. Real Mad Honey runs on Shopify Plus with a custom storefront, A/B testing and Storefront API integrations. Checkout customization on Shopify now runs through checkout extensibility, using checkout UI extensions, Shopify Functions and web pixels, so I plan any checkout changes around that.

Can you set up back-in-stock alerts without an app?

Yes. Car Audio Garage and Musway USA send restock alerts by email and SMS through Klaviyo, Brevo and Cloudflare Workers, with no alert app subscription. The same approach works for other stores that already use Klaviyo or Brevo.

Will custom features slow my store down?

Not when they are built carefully. Custom Liquid often replaces heavier app scripts, and I defer non-critical JavaScript and check results in Shopify's Web Performance dashboard. Speed is reviewed before launch and after every major change.

How much does a Shopify developer cost?

Shopify work is priced per project after a free audit or a short call, because scope drives the price. On the contact form you can select a budget bracket, the lowest being under $499 and the highest $2,000-$2,999, or pick "Let's Discuss" for larger builds. Once the scope is clear, I send a fixed quote with the timeline and deliverables spelled out.

Can you maintain my Shopify store after launch?

Yes. I maintain live Shopify stores including Outdoor eStore, Frog Dive and About Space Lighting, covering theme fixes, new sections, speed checks and content changes. Maintenance runs as a separate monthly plan.
