New MacBook Pro 2026: OLED Touchscreen, M6 Chip and Everything Apple Announced

By Eoin Villarin, 2026-10-29

Apple's first touchscreen Mac with a PROLED XDR display, the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6, a new iMac and an OLED iPad mini: official specs, prices, release dates and which to buy.

What is the new MacBook Pro for 2026?

The new MacBook Pro 2026 comes in two versions. The MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display is Apple's first touchscreen Mac, with a tandem OLED screen, Dynamic Island and M5 Pro or M5 Max chips from $2,899. The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 keeps the mini-LED design with Apple's newest chip from $1,999. Both arrive November 6, 2026.

Key takeaways

  • The MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display is the first Mac with an OLED touchscreen, starting at $2,899 for 14-inch and $3,399 for 16-inch.
  • The OLED models use M5 Pro and M5 Max chips with up to 128GB of memory and up to 16TB of storage.
  • The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 starts at $1,999 with a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU and up to 24 hours of battery life.
  • Pre-orders opened October 28, 2026, and both MacBook Pro models arrive on November 6, 2026.
  • Apple also released an iMac with M6 from $1,499 and an 8.5-inch OLED iPad mini with A20 Pro from $699.

The new MacBook Pro 2026 lineup is the biggest change to Apple's pro laptops in five years. In one week Apple released a 14-inch MacBook Pro with the new M6 chip and then its first touchscreen Mac, a redesigned MacBook Pro with a tandem OLED display Apple calls PROLED XDR. A new iMac with M6 and an OLED iPad mini came out the same week.

This guide covers what actually shipped, the official specs and US prices, and how the two new MacBook Pro models compare. As a full-stack developer who builds in Xcode, VS Code and the browser every day, I also explain which model makes sense for developers, designers and business owners, and what a touchscreen Mac changes for the websites you run.

Every spec and price below comes from Apple Newsroom, and I link the announcement next to each product. Performance figures are Apple's own claims from its internal testing.

MacBook Pro With PROLED XDR Display: Apple's First Touchscreen Mac

The headline product is the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, announced on October 28. It is the first Mac with an OLED screen and the first Mac with touch support, and it comes in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes. According to MacRumors, the existing mini-LED MacBook Pro models stay on sale alongside it.

PROLED XDR display specs

PROLED XDR uses tandem OLED, which stacks two layers of self-lit pixels for higher brightness. Apple lists these specs:

  • Sizes: 14.2 inches and 16.3 inches diagonally, with thinner borders.
  • Brightness: up to 2000 nits peak for both HDR and SDR content.
  • Contrast: 10,000,000:1, with true blacks because each pixel switches off on its own.
  • Refresh rate: ProMotion from 10Hz up to 120Hz.
  • Color: P3 and Adobe RGB, plus more than 80% of Rec. 2020.
  • Glare: an antireflective coating is standard, and the optional nano-texture finish is now etched into the cover glass.

How touch works on the Mac

The touch sensor is built into the display panel itself rather than added as a separate layer on top. In macOS 27 you can swipe to scroll a webpage, pinch to zoom a photo, drag and drop slides, double-tap a window to fill the screen, or flick it to tile. Apple also redesigned the hinge so the screen stays steady when you tap it, and added video stabilization so your camera feed does not shake when you touch the screen during a call.

Existing apps work right away because macOS translates touches into clicks. Designers can use the whole display as a canvas, and musicians can play software instruments on screen.

Dynamic Island comes to the Mac

The camera notch is gone. In its place is a smaller Dynamic Island, the same idea as on iPhone, which now holds Spotlight search, Live Activities such as music playback, and Siri AI. Siri AI is in beta in macOS 27.2 with language and region limits.

M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, memory and storage

The OLED models do not use M6. They run the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips Apple introduced in March 2026, which join two 3-nanometer dies into one chip. Storage now goes up to 16TB.

What a Touchscreen Mac Means for Your Website

This is the part most product roundups skip. Once touchscreen MacBook Pro models reach customers on November 6, your website will get touch input on a large laptop screen running desktop Safari and Chrome. Many sites still assume that a big screen means a mouse.

  1. Stop relying on hover. Menus, tooltips and product image swaps that only open on hover are hard to use with a finger. Make every hover action also work on tap or click.
  2. Use pointer events and media queries. Handle input with pointer events instead of mouse-only events, and use @media (any-pointer: coarse) to give touch users larger tap targets without changing the layout for mouse users.
  3. Size tap targets properly. Buttons and links should be at least 24 by 24 CSS pixels under WCAG 2.2, and closer to 44 pixels is more comfortable.
  4. Check dark mode on OLED. OLED shows true black, so dark themes look sharper but low-contrast grey text and banding in gradients become easier to spot.
  5. Keep interactions fast. Touch makes slow responses more obvious. My guide to Interaction to Next Paint explains how to keep taps and clicks responsive.

Which New MacBook Pro I Would Pick as a Web Developer

For most web development, including Shopify themes, WordPress builds, React and Next.js apps, the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 is the sensible choice. It builds Xcode and JavaScript projects quickly, lasts all day on battery, and the $900 saved pays for a good external monitor. I build Swift and cross-platform apps too, as I wrote in my article on building one codebase for desktop, Android and iPhone, and M6 handles that comfortably.

The OLED model with M5 Pro is worth it if you design interfaces and want to test touch on a desktop-sized screen, or if you run AI coding agents and local language models alongside Docker and several browsers. Memory is the deciding factor there: the M6 model tops out at 32GB, while M5 Pro goes up to 64GB, enough to run a local model without slowing everything else down. I cover how I use these tools in my AI coding agent workflow, and the latest models in the AI news roundup for October 2026.
