By Eoin Villarin, 2026-11-07
AI Overviews on over 80% of searches, a shared AI training opt-out, multi-country filters in Search Console and more. The six Google Search changes that matter for business websites this month, and what to do about each.
What changed in Google Search in November 2026?
As of early November 2026, AI Overviews appear on more than 80% of Google searches, Google has adopted a shared AI training opt-out that it plans to support in early 2027, Search Console can filter by several countries at once, and the September spam update has finished. Google has not announced a November core update.
Key takeaways
- AI Overviews now appear on more than 80% of Google searches, according to Semrush data.
- Google will support a shared AI training opt-out in robots.txt from early 2027, based on an IETF proposal.
- Search Console's Performance report can now filter by several countries at once.
- Google's AI content guidance now says to fact-check and review AI-generated content.
- The September 2026 spam update has finished, and no November core update had been announced as of early November.
Google Search changed quickly in the last few weeks. AI Overviews now show up on most searches, Google has agreed to a shared way to opt out of AI training, and Search Console got a small but useful filter. Here are the six changes I think matter most for business websites in November 2026, and what I would do about each one.
1. AI Overviews now appear on over 80% of searches
According to data from Semrush reported by Search Engine Roundtable, AI Overviews now show up for more than 80% of Google searches, up from about 50% in June of last year. Other trackers measure it differently: SE Ranking found AI Overviews on 82.5% of US brand searches, and seoClarity measured over 62% of queries, ranging from 55% to 84% by industry.
What to do: write pages that answer the main question in the first lines, add clear FAQ sections, use structured data and keep facts up to date. Google pulls AI Overview answers from pages it trusts, so being the clearest answer is now as important as ranking first. This is the core of answer engine optimization.
2. A new way to opt out of AI training across providers
Google announced on October 30, 2026, that it will adopt a shared AI training preference signal based on a proposal from the IETF's AIPREF working group. Instead of blocking each AI company separately, a site will be able to state one AI training preference in robots.txt that participating providers honor. Google plans to support it in early 2027, and Bing, OpenAI and Anthropic have made similar announcements.
John Mueller described the goal as "making it easy for website owners to opt out across all providers, or to pick and choose." Existing controls such as Google-Extended keep working. The IETF proposal is not final yet, so I would wait for the official syntax before changing robots.txt on client sites.
3. Search Console now filters by several countries at once
The Performance report in Google Search Console now lets you select multiple countries in the country filter. Before, you could only view one country at a time. Google said it made the change to "make it easier for you to analyze traffic patterns across different countries and devices." If you sell in the US and Canada, or in Australia and New Zealand, you can now see those markets as one group.
4. Google's AI content guidance now says to fact-check
Google updated its guidance on AI-generated content to say that it should be fact-checked and reviewed for accuracy. It also warned against deceptive authorship information. Using AI to help write is fine, but publishing unchecked AI text under a made-up expert name is exactly what Google is pushing against. Real authors, real experience and checked facts are the safe path.
5. The September spam update is done, with no November core update yet
Google's September 2026 spam update finished rolling out in October. As of early November, Google had not announced a November core update. The two confirmed core updates of 2026 ran from March 27 to April 8 and from May 21 to June 2. If your traffic moved in October, compare the dates with the spam update first.
6. Shopping and local changes
- Universal Cart launched in Google Search in the US, which moves more of the shopping journey into Google itself. Clean product data and Merchant Center feeds matter more than ever for online stores.
- Google Business Profiles is rolling out Business Home as the new profile home, added controls for third-party ordering, is expanding AI-powered messaging, and published a help document for managing offers on November 6.
For local businesses, a complete and active Business Profile is still one of the cheapest ways to win calls.
What I would do this month
- Rewrite the opening of your top pages so the first two sentences answer the main question.
- Add or improve FAQ sections and FAQ structured data on service and product pages.
- Use the new multi-country filter in Search Console to compare the markets you sell in.
- Check that every article shows a real author with real experience.
- Update your Google Business Profile with current offers, photos and ordering links.
