The Challenge

Fernside Automotive is an independent workshop on Regent Street in Redfern, Sydney, with a loyal following its own socials call the Fernside crew. The Fernside Automotive WordPress website had to serve two very different visitors: drivers who need a logbook service, brakes or a diagnostic, and drivers who only need an eSafety check, the NSW pink slip, to renew their registration.

Those two intents need different answers. A pink slip customer wants to know Fernside is an authorised inspection station, what gets checked and what happens if the car fails. A service customer wants to see the workshop's range and book a time. One long page would have buried both.

The site also had to sound like the workshop itself: friendly, honest and local, the same voice customers know from Facebook and Instagram, while turning both audiences into bookings.

The Solution

I built the site on WordPress with the Breakdance builder and organised it around those two jobs. eSafety Checks has its own top-level menu item and dedicated page, separate from the Services menu, so pink slip searches land on a page that explains the authorised inspection, what is checked, how results go to Transport for NSW and the 14-day reinspection window.

Workshop services each have their own page, from logbook servicing and air conditioning to clutches and transmissions, diagnostics and auto electrical, cooling, brakes, tyres and towing. Booking is never more than one tap away: the header carries the phone number and a Book Online button, the homepage FAQ answers opening hours and how to book, and Google reviews sit on the homepage as social proof. Facebook and Instagram links are woven into the layout so the crew personality carries through.

Since launch I have run the ongoing maintenance: updates, uptime monitoring, security hardening and scheduled backups, which is why the site holds a 99.9% uptime record with zero security incidents.

A Redfern mechanic with a crew, not just customers

Fernside's team brings more than 59 years of combined experience across just about every make and model of passenger vehicle. Their customers are inner Sydney locals, commuters and second-hand car buyers, and many of them found the workshop through word of mouth or the Fernside crew pages on social media.

That mix shaped the brief. Some visitors arrive ready to book a yearly service. Others need a pre-purchase inspection before they hand over cash for a used car. Others have a registration renewal due and simply need a pink slip this week.

The website had to welcome all three, explain the workshop's honest, fair-priced approach in plain language, and get each person to the right page without making them hunt through menus on a phone.

eSafety check page and workshop service pages for Fernside Automotive

The navigation splits the site into two clear paths, and every service gets a page of its own that can rank and convert on its own merits.

  • eSafety Checks: a dedicated page covering the authorised inspection, the items checked (brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, lights, seat belts and emissions) and the 14-day reinspection window.
  • Services: logbook servicing, air conditioning, steering and suspension, exhaust, clutches and transmissions, diagnostics and auto electrical, cooling, brakes, inspections, windows, towing and tyres.
  • Trust pages: About Us, a workshop Gallery and Contact Us, with opening hours repeated in the footer.

Separating the pink slip page from the service list means a driver searching for an eSafety check in Redfern lands on one focused answer instead of a general services page.

Booking-first design that carries the Fernside crew personality

Design decisions followed one rule: a visitor should always know how to book. The phone number and Book Online button stay in the header on every page, and each service section ends with a clear next step.

The tone of the copy and imagery mirrors the workshop's social accounts. Real workshop photography, a gallery of the hoists and service bays, and Google reviews on the homepage show the team rather than stock images. Social links sit in the layout so visitors can see the crew's day-to-day posts.

Everything is responsive, so the same experience works on a phone at the kerb, which is where most booking calls start. Breakdance gave me precise control over spacing and layout without adding heavy page-builder bloat.

Local SEO for a Sydney mechanic and pink slip searches

Local search is how new customers find an independent workshop, so the structure was built for it from day one. Each service page has its own title, heading and description, written around what Redfern and inner Sydney drivers actually type, such as eSafety check, logbook service or clutch repair.

The address, phone number and trading hours are consistent across the site, the footer and the contact page, which supports the workshop's Google listing. The homepage FAQ answers common questions in plain sentences that search engines can reuse.

I cover the wider approach in my guide to local SEO for mechanics and tradies in Australia. Pages are kept lean so they load quickly on mobile, which matters for both rankings and impatient drivers.

Ongoing maintenance for the Fernside Automotive WordPress website

A workshop site is only useful if it is up when someone needs a pink slip. I run Fernside's maintenance as an ongoing service: WordPress core, Breakdance and plugin updates, 24/7 uptime monitoring, security hardening and scheduled backups.

The results row shows where that lands: a 99.9% uptime record, zero security incidents, round-the-clock monitoring and every page loading clean. Updates are tested before they go live, so a plugin change never breaks the booking path.

It is the same proactive approach I use for Chandos Autos, another long-running workshop site I look after.
