The Challenge

The Erica Hotel Motel sits in the small Gippsland town of Erica, in the foothills of the Baw Baw National Park, and has been the town's meeting point for over a century. The Erica Hotel WordPress website had to do two jobs at once: sell rooms, meals and functions, and act as a trip-planning guide for the region.

A country pub-hotel lives on visitors who are deciding where to base a weekend. They search for skiing at Mt Baw Baw, the Walhalla rail trail, fishing, bike trails or local history long before they search for a motel. If the hotel only talked about itself, it would miss those people entirely.

So the site needed a rich Explore Erica guide with summer and winter activities, alongside clear paths to book a table, check room availability and enquire about events, all in the warm, no-nonsense voice of the pub.

The Solution

I built the site on WordPress with Breakdance and gave Explore Erica the same weight as the hotel itself. The main menu opens on Explore Erica, with pages for Summer Activities, Winter Activities, Bike Riding, History and Adventure, Hiking, Skiing, and Camping, Fishing and 4WD. A blog extends that guide with local articles on walks to the Mt Erica summit, the drive to Thomson Dam, fishing at Blue Rock Lake and dinner after a day in Walhalla.

The hotel side is just as clear. The Hot Rock Experience page sells the venue's signature table-cooked steaks, Our Menu and Stay with Us cover dining and the six motel rooms, and What's On, Trivia and Rich History tell the pub's story. Book a Table and Check Availability sit in the header, with the room button linking straight to the direct booking engine.

I maintain and secure the site through every holiday season, so the welcome mat is always out.

A Gippsland country pub where the destination sells the hotel

Erica is a town of just over 300 people at the edge of the mountains, close to Mt Baw Baw, Walhalla and the Thomson Dam. Mick and Katie run the Erica Hotel Motel, where the original timber building opened in 1915 and was rebuilt by locals after a fire in the early 1980s.

Visitors include skiers and snow day-trippers in winter, hikers, mountain bikers and anglers in summer, families on caravan trips, and locals who come for Friday happy hour and the hot rock steaks.

Most of them decide on the region first and the accommodation second. That insight shaped the whole project: the website needed to be useful to someone planning a trip to Gippsland's Mountain Rivers Region, then make the hotel the obvious place to eat, drink and stay.

Explore Erica guide pages for summer and winter visitors

The Explore Erica section is the heart of the site's search strategy. Each activity gets its own page so it can answer a specific question:

  • Seasonal pages: Summer Activities and Winter Activities, including the snowfields at Mt Baw Baw.
  • Activity pages: Bike Riding, Hiking, Skiing, History and Adventure, and Camping, Fishing and 4WD.
  • Local guides: blog articles on the Mt Erica summit and Mushroom Rocks walks, the Thomson Dam drive, Blue Rock Lake fishing, camping and caravan options, and Walhalla restaurants.

Guide content sits in the same navigation as the hotel pages, so a visitor reading about a trail is always one tap from booking dinner or a room for the night.

Rooms, hot rock dining and functions in one clear layout

The homepage introduces the hotel in short, punchy blocks: dine at the only true Hot Rock Experience within 100km, share a cold beer, host an event for up to 70 guests, enjoy Friday happy hour or relax in one of the six motel rooms.

Each block links to a dedicated page. The Hot Rock page explains the table-cooked steak, lamb, pork and veg on volcanic stone. Stay with Us lists the room features, and Check Availability opens the direct booking engine. Functions and What's On cover events, while Trivia and Rich History share the pub's personality, including the Bushman's Museum.

Google reviews and an Instagram feed show real meals and real nights out, which persuade far better than stock photography.

Local SEO and Google AI visibility for Erica VIC

Search visibility for a regional hotel depends on owning the local questions travellers ask. Page titles and headings target phrases like accommodation in Erica VIC, things to do near Mt Baw Baw and hot rock dining in Gippsland, with keyword research in Semrush guiding the priorities.

The blog articles are written as direct, factual answers, which is exactly the content Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode like to cite. I explain that approach in Google AI Mode and AI Overviews for small businesses.

Consistent address and contact details across every page support the hotel's map listing, and lean Breakdance layouts keep pages quick on patchy country mobile coverage, where many visitors are browsing from the road.

Maintaining the Erica Hotel WordPress website through every holiday season

Peak demand arrives with the snow season and school holidays, which is exactly when a website cannot fall over. I maintain the Erica Hotel site with regular WordPress and plugin updates, 24/7 monitoring, security hardening and scheduled backups.

The results show a 99.9% uptime record, zero security incidents and every page loading clean. When the team adds events, trivia nights or new menus, the changes go live without breaking the layout or the booking links.

For another hospitality venue I support, see The Leveson, a North Melbourne pub with menus, functions and online bookings.
