The Challenge
Club9 in North Strathfield's Bakehouse Quarter bills itself as Sydney's premier pool, darts and sports bar venue, with 34 professional-grade pool tables, competition shuffleboards and steel tip dart boards. The Club 9 WordPress website had to organise a lot under one roof: part venue, part sports club and part events business.
Different visitors want very different things. A casual group wants to book a table tonight. Serious players want tournaments, leagues and coaching. Members want membership details. Event planners want function packages. Then there are the games themselves: pool, American pool, snooker, darts and shuffleboard, each with its own audience.
The challenge was to give memberships, tournaments, functions and every game format a clean section of its own, without turning navigation into a maze for someone who simply wants a table and a drink this evening.
The Solution
I built the site on WordPress with Breakdance using a play-first navigation structure. The main menu reads like the venue: Membership, Functions, Tournaments, What's On, Play, Food and Drink, Competitions, Pro Shop, Coaching and Contact, with a Book a Table button always visible.
The Play menu gives each game a dedicated page: Pool, American Pool, Snooker, Darts and Shuffleboard. Competitions splits into Tournaments and Leagues. Functions and Events has its own funnel for corporate events and birthdays, and the contact form asks visitors what they are interested in, from functions and group bookings to coaching, retail products and leagues, so each enquiry reaches the right person.
The homepage shows the scale of the venue, Google reviews, an Instagram feed of tournament nights and a newsletter sign-up. A careers page with an application form supports hiring. I keep the site maintained and monitored through tournament nights, always racked and ready.
A Sydney cue sports venue with many audiences
Club9 sits on Level 1 at 9 George Street in the historic Bakehouse Quarter, with a full bar and kitchen, tournament-grade tables and late trading on Friday and Saturday nights.
Its visitors range from families and friends booking a casual game, to league players, tournament entrants and people seeking coaching from the venue's head coach. Event planners look for corporate functions and birthday parties, while players visit the Pro Shop for cues, shafts and cases.
Each of those groups needs a different answer, and most are browsing on a phone. The website needed to make the venue's scale and quality obvious immediately, then route each visitor to their path in one or two taps.
Play-first navigation on the Club 9 WordPress website
The menu is organised by what people come to do, not by internal departments.
- Play: dedicated pages for Pool, American Pool, Snooker, Darts and Shuffleboard.
- Compete: Tournaments and Leagues under Competitions, plus What's On for upcoming events.
- Belong: Membership and Coaching for regular players.
- Celebrate: Functions and Events for corporate events, birthdays and group bookings.
- Shop and eat: Pro Shop, and Food and Drink.
Book a Table stays in the header on every page, so a casual visitor never has to dig through tournament details to make a booking. Footer links repeat the key paths alongside opening hours and directions.
Membership, functions and coaching enquiry funnels
Memberships, functions and coaching are the venue's highest-value enquiries, so each has its own landing page and call to action. Function content highlights private areas, food and drink packages and the atmosphere, while membership and coaching pages speak to regular players.
The shared contact form includes a What are you interested in? field with options for functions, group bookings, birthday parties, coaching, retail products, and leagues or competitions. That one question means each enquiry lands with the right staff member and the venue can respond faster.
A separate events manager number in the footer gives function planners a direct line, and a newsletter sign-up keeps players informed about upcoming tournaments.
Social proof, Instagram and local search for a North Strathfield sports bar
Club9 is a visual, social venue, so the site shows it. Google reviews describe the tables, coaching and function nights, and an Instagram feed brings in fresh posts about pizza nights, live sport and darts action without staff needing to update the website.
For search, pages target the terms people use, such as pool hall Sydney, snooker in North Strathfield and sports bar Sydney, informed by keyword research in Semrush. Each game page answers its own query rather than competing with the homepage.
Clear, factual venue information also feeds AI-driven search results. My guide to Google AI Mode and AI Overviews for small businesses explains why that matters for venues like this.
Monitoring and maintenance through tournament nights
Big events bring traffic spikes, so the site is maintained to stay steady when it matters. I handle WordPress, Breakdance and plugin updates, 24/7 uptime monitoring, security hardening and scheduled backups, and check the booking, enquiry and careers forms after each update.
The results row reflects that routine: a 99.9% uptime record, zero security incidents and every page loading clean.
