> Wero went live for Dutch online payments on October 26, 2026, starting the iDEAL to Wero migration. Here is the timeline and what EU online stores should change.

## What does the iDEAL to Wero migration mean for online stores?

The iDEAL to Wero migration started for online shops on October 26, 2026, when Dutch banks went live with Wero payments. Merchants switch through their payment provider, with the migration due to finish by December 31, 2027. Wero is EUR only, supports refunds but not recurring payments yet, and Dutch purchase protection arrives by January 2028.

**Key takeaways**

- Wero online payments went live with participating Dutch banks on October 26, 2026, letting merchants start moving from iDEAL to Wero.
- The Dutch Payments Association says the iDEAL to Wero migration should be completed by December 31, 2027 at the latest.
- EPI says more than 48,000 merchants in Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands have processed Wero transactions, and Wero has 60 million person-to-person users.
- Stripe's documentation says Wero is EUR only, has a EUR 0.50 minimum, supports refunds for up to 730 days and does not yet support recurring payments.
- On September 29, 2026, Wero, Bizum, Bancomat, MB WAY and Vipps MobilePay announced the European Network for Payments, covering about 130 million users in 13 countries.

The iDEAL to Wero migration moved from plan to reality on October 26, 2026, when Dutch banks and the European Payments Initiative (EPI) switched on Wero for online shop payments in the Netherlands. iDEAL, the Dutch online bank payment method, is being folded into Wero, a bank-backed European wallet that already handles ecommerce in Germany, Belgium, France and Luxembourg. The goal is to finish the move by the end of 2027.

This guide is for online stores selling in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France and Luxembourg, whether you run Shopify, WooCommerce or a custom checkout. It explains what changed in September and October 2026, the official timeline, what Wero can and cannot do yet, and the checkout changes to make before peak season. ## What Is Wero?

Wero is a payment wallet run by EPI Company and backed by European banks and payment providers. Shoppers link their existing bank account, so payments move directly from account to account without a card. It started as a person-to-person payment app in 2024 and now covers online shopping, invoices and, step by step, in-store payments.

EPI says Wero's person-to-person service has 60 million users in Belgium, France, Germany and Luxembourg, and that EPI is supported by 18 European banks and payment providers with more than 50 member institutions. In its [September 16 update](https://epicompany.eu/media-insights/wero-next-now-e-commerce-accelerates-as-in-store-takes-its-first-steps), EPI said more than 48,000 merchants across Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands have processed Wero transactions online and in store.

## What Changed With iDEAL in October 2026?

On October 26, 2026, Wero online payments went live with all participating Dutch banks, according to [EPI](https://epicompany.eu/media-insights/epi-company-initiates-wero-roll-out-in-the-netherlands). Customers of ABN AMRO, ASN Bank, bunq, BUUT, Finom, ING, Knab, Nationale-Nederlanden, Rabobank, Triodos Bank and Van Lanschot Kempen can use it, and payment service providers can now enable Wero for Dutch merchants. EPI's CEO said "we are entering this new phase ahead of the peak season."

EPI says about 15 million Dutch consumers will be part of the migration by 2027. The [Dutch Payments Association](https://www.betaalvereniging.nl/en/news/next-phase-of-ideal-migration-to-wero-begins-in-october/) says iDEAL | Wero payments will move gradually onto Wero's infrastructure from October 2026, with the full migration completed by December 31, 2027 at the latest. For shoppers, iDEAL says the steps stay the same as today: choose your bank and approve the payment.

### Purchase protection and subscriptions come later

Two features Dutch merchants rely on are not ready yet. EPI plans workshops on purchase protection in Q4 2026, an announced solution in Q1 2027 and full purchase protection built into Wero for Dutch consumers by January 2028. Subscriptions and pay on delivery are planned for Q2 2027.

## Where Else Is Wero Live for Online Payments?

- **Germany:** Wero has handled online retail payments since late 2025. EPI names Decathlon, dm, Eventim and Lidl among merchants.

- **France:** EPI says Air France, Decathlon, Fnac Darty and Orange have confirmed adoption, and [BNP Paribas](https://epicompany.eu/media-insights/bn-paribas-supports-the-accelerated-rollout-of-wero) says Orange's Sosh brand has offered Wero for online subscription payments since September 2, 2026.

- **Belgium:** live for ecommerce, and BNP Paribas says Decathlon launched Wero in Germany and Belgium on July 20, 2026.

- **Luxembourg:** launched in September 2026 for person-to-person, ecommerce, invoice and in-store payments. EPI says existing Payconiq QR codes keep working through Wero until the end of the year.

## What Is the European Network for Payments?

On September 29, 2026, Bancomat (Italy), Bizum (Spain), EPI/Wero, SIBS with MB WAY (Portugal) and Vipps MobilePay (Nordics) announced the [European Network for Payments](https://epicompany.eu/media-insights/european-network-for-payments), a jointly owned company based in Madrid. It will connect their wallets through a shared layer built on instant account-to-account payments. Together they serve about 130 million users in 13 countries, which the partners say covers more than 70% of the population of the EU and Norway.

The first phase is cross-border person-to-person payments, with ecommerce and point-of-sale payments in later phases. No dates were given, so treat this as a 2027 and beyond development. For merchants, the long-term promise is one bank-based payment method that works for shoppers from Lisbon to Oslo.

## How Do Merchants Accept Wero?

You accept Wero through your payment service provider, not by integrating with EPI directly. Stripe's [Wero documentation](https://docs.stripe.com/payments/wero) gives a useful picture of how it works today:

- Customer locations listed are Belgium, France, Germany and Luxembourg, and payments are in EUR only.

- Shoppers are redirected to Wero, scan a QR code or open the Wero app, approve, and return to your site. Stripe says payments typically complete in under 10 seconds.

- The minimum payment is EUR 0.50, and the maximum depends on the shopper's bank.

- Full and partial refunds are supported for up to 730 days.

- Recurring payments and disputes are not supported, and Stripe's Express Checkout Element and Checkout in subscription mode do not support Wero.

Adyen, Mollie and MultiSafepay have also published Wero or iDEAL | Wero information for merchants. Timelines and pricing differ by provider, so check yours directly.

## What the iDEAL to Wero Migration Means for Your Online Store

For EU online stores, especially those selling into the Netherlands, this is a checkout change that cannot be ignored. EPI expects about 15 million Dutch consumers to move from iDEAL to Wero, and Black Friday on November 27 and Sinterklaas on December 5 fall right in the middle of the switch. Here is what I recommend doing now.

- **Ask your payment provider for its Wero plan in writing.** Find out when your provider moves iDEAL to Wero, whether anything changes in your integration, how pricing changes and whether you need to sign new terms. Shopify Payments, Stripe, Mollie, Adyen and WooCommerce plugin users all depend on their provider's timeline.

- **Do not change your checkout during peak season.** If your provider handles the switch for you, let it happen. If it needs a new integration, schedule the work for January 2027 and test it on staging first.

- **Update payment logos and copy.** Replace old iDEAL badges in your theme footer, product pages and checkout with the iDEAL | Wero branding your provider supplies, so shoppers recognize the method.

- **Test the redirect and app switch on mobile.** Wero payments jump to a banking or Wero app and back. Make sure orders are confirmed by webhook, not only by the return page, so a shopper who closes the browser still gets an order.

- **Keep cards and SEPA Direct Debit for subscriptions.** Wero does not support recurring payments yet, and Dutch subscriptions are only planned for Q2 2027.

- **Clarify refunds and returns.** Without purchase protection until 2028, shoppers will look harder at your return policy. Make refund timelines and return steps easy to find.

- **Use Wero for cross-border growth.** If you sell from the Netherlands into Germany, Belgium, France or Luxembourg, one Wero integration covers all of them. Set payment method order per market in Shopify Markets or your WooCommerce checkout.

- **Check accessibility.** Payment selection and redirects must work with keyboards and screen readers under the [European Accessibility Act](https://amvprosox.com/blog/european-accessibility-act-website-compliance).

If you are on Shopify, note that the [Shopify Fall '26 Edition](https://amvprosox.com/blog/shopify-fall-26-edition-whats-new) added MB WAY and other local methods to Shopify Payments, which shows how quickly local European options are arriving in mainstream checkouts.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is iDEAL being replaced by Wero?

Yes, gradually. iDEAL began showing the combined iDEAL | Wero brand in 2026, Wero online payments went live with Dutch banks on October 26, 2026, and the Dutch Payments Association says the migration should be completed by December 31, 2027 at the latest. Shoppers keep paying from their own bank account with similar steps.

### Do I need to change my checkout for Wero?

It depends on your payment provider. Most merchants accept iDEAL and Wero through a provider such as Stripe, Adyen or Mollie, which manages the technical move. Ask your provider for its timeline, pricing and any integration changes, update your payment logos, and test the mobile redirect and webhook confirmation before switching anything live.

### Does Wero support subscriptions and refunds?

Refunds are supported. Stripe says Wero allows full and partial refunds for up to 730 days. Recurring payments are not supported yet, and EPI plans subscriptions and pay on delivery for the Netherlands in Q2 2027. Keep cards or SEPA Direct Debit for subscription products until your provider confirms recurring Wero support.

### Which countries can use Wero for online shopping?

Wero is live for online payments in Germany, Belgium, France and Luxembourg, and its Dutch ecommerce rollout started on October 26, 2026. EPI says Wero is expected in Austria in 2027. The new European Network for Payments plans to link Wero with Bizum, Bancomat, MB WAY and Vipps MobilePay, starting with person-to-person payments.

## Get Your Checkout Ready for Wero

The iDEAL to Wero migration is one of the biggest European checkout changes in years, but it is a planned, gradual move with a deadline at the end of 2027. Stores that confirm their provider's plan, update branding and test the mobile flow early will keep conversion steady while competitors scramble.
