> GTA 6 hits PS5 on November 19, the $899.99 PS5 Pro keeps selling out and Sony has not announced Black Friday deals. Here are verified US prices and what to buy.

## Should you buy a PS5 now for GTA 6 or wait for Black Friday 2026?

GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026, starting at $79.99. Since April 2, 2026, US PS5 list prices are $599.99 for the Digital Edition, $649.99 for the disc model and $899.99 for the PS5 Pro, and the Pro was sold out at major US retailers through October. Sony has not announced 2026 Black Friday deals; in 2025 its deals started November 21, so buy a standard PS5 at list price if you need it on launch day and avoid paying resale prices for a Pro.

**Key takeaways**

- Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with the Standard Edition at $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition at $99.99.
- Sony raised US PS5 prices on April 2, 2026, to $599.99 for the Digital Edition, $649.99 for the disc model and $899.99 for the PS5 Pro.
- In mid-October 2026 the PS5 Pro was sold out at PlayStation Direct, Best Buy, Amazon, Target and Walmart, with resale listings around $1,300 to over $1,500.
- As of November 2, 2026, Sony had not announced Black Friday deals; in 2025 it announced them on November 18 and took $100 off the PS5 Pro.
- Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki told the Wall Street Journal in August 2026 that a PS6 launch date has not been fixed.
- The boxed version of GTA VI contains a download code, so the $599.99 PS5 Digital Edition does not miss out on anything for this game.

Grand Theft Auto VI finally arrives on November 19, and for a lot of US households that makes this the PlayStation holiday. The catch: the console many fans want for it, the $899.99 PS5 Pro, has been sold out at major US retailers for weeks, and every PS5 model costs more than it did a year ago.

Add Black Friday on November 27, an April price hike and endless PS6 chatter, and it is hard to know whether to buy now or wait. Here are the confirmed facts and a plain answer for gamers and parents shopping for gifts.

The facts below come from the official PlayStation Blog, Rockstar's pre-order announcement, Sony's latest quarterly filing, and reporting from CNBC, BGR, Mashable and others. Anything that is a rumor or an unconfirmed report is labeled as one.

## When does GTA 6 come out on PS5, and what does it cost?

Rockstar's [pre-order announcement](https://www.gamedeveloper.com/press-release/rockstar-games-announces-pre-orders-for-grand-theft-auto-vi) confirms GTA VI launches November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The Standard Edition is $79.99, and the Ultimate Edition, which adds extra vehicles, weapons and outfits, is $99.99. There is no PS4 version: the [official PlayStation game page](https://www.playstation.com/en-us/games/grand-theft-auto-vi/) says it will not be available for PS4 consoles.

Digital pre-orders can start pre-loading on November 12, a week early. The boxed version also reaches stores on November 12, but it contains a download code rather than the game on a disc. Purchases made before November 20 include the Vintage Vice City Pack, and digital pre-orders include a free month of GTA+.

It has been a long wait. The game was first planned for 2025, slipped to May 26, 2026, and then moved to November 19 in a [second delay announced in November 2025](https://www.wjhg.com/2025/11/06/grand-theft-auto-vi-release-date-pushed-back-again).

### Does GTA 6 play better on PS5?

Sony has a marketing partnership with Rockstar here. A June 24 [PlayStation Blog post](https://blog.playstation.com/2026/06/24/grand-theft-auto-vi-plays-best-on-ps5-november-19/) says the game "will play best on PS5," pointing to DualSense haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, Tempest 3D Audio and fast SSD loading. That is a marketing position, not an exclusive, since the Xbox version launches the same day.

The PlayStation Store also labels the game "PS5 Pro Enhanced." But as [Vice noted in October](https://www.vice.com/en/article/gta-6-ps5-features-ps5-pro-enhanced/), the specific Pro improvements have not been detailed, and the badge does not confirm a 60fps mode. Keep that in mind before paying a premium for a Pro.

## Why is the PS5 Pro sold out?

The PS5 Pro has been the hardest console to find this fall. [BGR reported on October 10](https://www.bgr.com/2278502/playstation-5-pro-shortage-how-long/) that all major retailers, including Sony's own store, had sold out. A [Mashable stock check on October 13](https://tech.yahoo.com/gaming/articles/ps5-pro-stock-updates-where-070000526.html) listed PlayStation Direct, Best Buy, Amazon, Target and Walmart as sold out, with pre-owned units at GameStop at $1,329.99 and resellers asking roughly $1,300 to more than $1,500.

Restocks do happen, but they disappear fast. [The Shortcut tracked](https://www.theshortcut.com/p/ps5-pro-restock-best-buy-october-2026) a Best Buy restock on the evening of October 23 that sold out, plus brief drops at Amazon and PlayStation Direct the week before.

Two forces are behind it. Demand climbed as GTA VI got closer, and supply is tight because of the global memory chip crunch, which [Complex](https://www.complex.com/pop-culture/a/bernadette-giacomazzo/gta-6-sony-psp-shortages) and others link to AI companies buying huge volumes of memory for data centers. In Japan, Sony has even sold Pro units by lottery, limited to players with at least 60 hours of PS4 or PS5 play time over the past two years.

How long will it last? According to a retailer memo first reported by the site PlayFront and cited by BGR, Sony blamed "temporary market supply constraints and high demand" and expects the shortage to run through early 2027 at the earliest. Sony has not published that memo, so treat the timeline as a report, not an official statement.

## How much does a PS5 cost in the US right now?

Sony raised prices worldwide on April 2, 2026. The [PlayStation Blog announcement](https://blog.playstation.com/2026/03/27/new-price-changes-for-ps5-ps5-pro-and-playstation-portal-remote-player/), written by Isabelle Tomatis, Sony Interactive Entertainment's vice president of global marketing, set these US recommended prices:

- **PS5 Digital Edition:** $599.99 (up $100)

- **PS5 with disc drive:** $649.99 (up $100)

- **PS5 Pro:** $899.99 (up $150)

- **PlayStation Portal remote player:** $249.99

That was the second increase in less than eight months. In [August 2025](https://techcrunch.com/2025/08/20/sony-is-increasing-the-price-of-the-playstation-5-as-new-tariffs-take-hold), Sony added $50 to each model, taking the disc PS5 to $549.99, the Digital Edition to $499.99 and the Pro to $749.99.

![Bar chart of US PS5 list prices: Digital Edition $499.99 after August 2025 and $599.99 since April 2026, disc PS5 $549.99 and $649.99, PS5 Pro $749.99 and $899.99](https://amvprosox.com/api/img/1793605089656-5vfiux)
*Every PS5 model went up by $100 or more on April 2, 2026. Data: PlayStation Blog, TechCrunch.*

Sony's official reason was "continued pressures in the global economic landscape." [CNBC's coverage](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/03/27/sony-playstation-5-ps5-price-rise.html) tied the move to a surge in memory chip prices as suppliers direct stock to AI data centers, and Ampere Analysis research director Piers Harding-Rolls told CNBC the hikes were largely inevitable given rising memory costs. For the bigger picture on why memory got so expensive, see my [breakdown of the October AI stock selloff](https://amvprosox.com/blog/ai-stock-selloff-intel-crash-october-2026).

Subscriptions crept up too. PlayStation Plus Essential went from $9.99 to $10.99 a month for new US subscribers on May 20, 2026, [Shacknews reported](https://www.shacknews.com/article/149181/ps-plus-price-increase-may-2026), with Sony citing "ongoing market conditions." Existing members keep their rate unless their plan changes or lapses.

## Will there be PS5 Black Friday deals in 2026?

As of November 2, Sony has not announced any 2026 Black Friday deals, and nothing has appeared on the PlayStation Blog. Black Friday falls on November 27 this year, with Cyber Monday on November 30.

Last year is the best guide. Sony [announced its 2025 Black Friday deals](https://blog.playstation.com/2025/11/18/playstations-black-friday-deals-2025/) on November 18 and started them November 21. It took $100 off the PS5 Pro, sold PS5 bundles at $449.99 for the disc model and $399.99 for the Digital Edition, cut $20 off DualSense controllers and the PlayStation Portal, and offered up to 33% off a 12-month PS Plus membership for new members.

There is no promise Sony repeats that this year, and a discount does not help much if the Pro is out of stock. Treat any "Black Friday PS5 price" you see online as a guess until Sony or a major retailer posts it.

## Should you buy a PS5 now or wait?

This is shopping guidance, not financial advice. Here is how I would think about it.

### Buy now if launch day matters

If someone in your home wants to play GTA VI on November 19, buy a standard PS5 or Digital Edition at list price from Sony or a major retailer. A disc PS5 plus the Standard Edition comes to $729.98 before tax, and the Digital Edition route is $679.98. Because the boxed copy of GTA VI is a download code anyway, the Digital Edition gives up nothing for this game.

### Skip the scalper Pro

The Pro is Sony's most powerful console, but paying $1,300 or more when its GTA VI enhancements have not been detailed is hard to justify. Set restock alerts and buy at $899.99, or start on a standard PS5. Also note that the Pro, like the Digital Edition, has no disc drive in the box; the drive is sold separately.

### Wait if you have no deadline

If launch day does not matter, waiting for Sony's Black Friday announcement costs you little. Last year's deals were revealed ten days before Black Friday. If no discount appears, you can still buy at list price, stock permitting.

### Parents: check the rating first

GTA VI is rated M (Mature 17+) by the ESRB, with content descriptors that include Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Sexual Content, Nudity, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol, according to the [PlayStation game page](https://www.playstation.com/en-us/games/grand-theft-auto-vi/). If the gift is for a younger player, a PS5 with a family-friendly game, an extra controller or a PS Plus membership may be the better choice.

### Avoid the scams

Mashable flagged an $800 PS5 Pro listing on Mercari as almost certainly a scam. If a "new" Pro is priced well below $899.99 right now, walk away and stick to Sony or big-box retailers.

## Is the PS6 coming soon? Should you wait for it?

Not this holiday. Sony has not announced a PS6 release date, price or specs. In August, Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki told the Wall Street Journal the company still had not fixed a launch date, [NME reported](https://www.nme.com/news/gaming-news/sony-ceo-gives-update-playstation6-no-fixed-release-date-3963406).

In February, Bloomberg reported that Sony was considering pushing the next PlayStation to 2028 or even 2029 because of the memory shortage. That remains an unconfirmed report. In June, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino told investors, "As a principle, we do not intend to sell hardware at significant losses," which suggests the next console will not be cheap. Leaked PS6 specs and price claims you see online are just that: leaks.

For GTA VI on PlayStation this year, the PS5 is the only option.

## How is PlayStation doing as a business?

Sony's [filing for April to June 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000313838/000110465926088915/tm2621477d1_6k.htm) shows its Game and Network Services segment brought in ¥937.1 billion in sales, essentially flat, while operating income jumped about 37% to ¥202.0 billion. Network services revenue, which includes PlayStation Plus, rose ¥36.0 billion, while hardware and others fell ¥26.0 billion.

PS5 shipments were down in the first full quarter after the April price increase. Sony shipped 1.6 million PS5 units, compared with 2.5 million a year earlier, bringing the lifetime total to 95.3 million, [VGChartz reported](https://www.vgchartz.com/article/468622/ps5-ships-953-million-units-as-of-june-2026/) from Sony's data. Monthly active users reached 125 million. Sony usually reports its July to September quarter in early November, the first numbers covering the run-up to GTA VI.

## What else is new on PlayStation in November?

- **PS Plus monthly games:** Dead Island 2, Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered and Monster Train 2 are playable from November 3 to November 30, per the [PlayStation Blog](https://blog.playstation.com/2026/10/28/playstation-plus-monthly-games-for-november-dead-island-2-tomb-raider-iv-vi-remastered-monster-train-2/).

- **GTA VI controllers:** [Limited Edition DualSense controllers](https://blog.playstation.com/2026/09/03/first-look-at-the-grand-theft-auto-vi-limited-edition-dualsense-wireless-controllers/) in Black and White launch November 19 at $84.99. In the US, the Black Edition is exclusive to PlayStation Direct.

- **Prism Collection:** Transparent [DualSense controllers ($84.99) and PS5 console covers ($74.99)](https://blog.playstation.com/2026/10/28/first-look-inside-the-prism-collection-with-three-new-transparent-designs-for-ps5-accessories/) open for pre-order on November 10 but do not launch until February 4, 2027, so they are not a Christmas-morning gift.

- **Recent first-party games:** Marvel's Wolverine launched September 15, per Sony's [September State of Play recap](https://blog.playstation.com/2026/09/03/state-of-play-state-of-play-japan-all-announcements-trailers/).

## Frequently asked questions

### Is GTA 6 coming to PS4?

No. The official PlayStation listing says GTA VI will not be available for PS4 consoles. It launches November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, and Rockstar has not announced a PC version.

### Do I need a PS5 Pro to play GTA 6?

No. GTA VI runs on the standard PS5 and the Digital Edition. It is labeled "PS5 Pro Enhanced," but the Pro improvements have not been detailed and no 60fps mode is confirmed.

### Will the PS5 be cheaper on Black Friday 2026?

Nobody knows yet. Sony had not announced 2026 deals as of November 2. Last year it announced deals on November 18, started them November 21 and took $100 off the PS5 Pro, but that is not a guarantee for this year.

### Does the GTA 6 physical copy come with a disc?

Rockstar says the boxed version contains a download code and goes on sale November 12 to support pre-loading. You need an internet connection either way, so the Digital Edition PS5 works fine.

### When is the PS6 coming out?

Sony has not announced a date. Its CEO said in August 2026 that no launch date had been fixed, and a February Bloomberg report said Sony was considering 2028 or 2029. Treat any specific PS6 date or spec sheet as a rumor until Sony confirms it.

## The bottom line

GTA VI on November 19 is the headline, and a standard PS5 at $649.99 or a Digital Edition at $599.99 is the simplest way to be ready for it. The PS5 Pro is hard to find at $899.99 and expensive on the resale market, Black Friday deals are not confirmed, and the PS6 has no date. Buy at list price if you need it by launch day, wait a few weeks if you do not, and do not pay scalper prices.

One more thing for anyone selling to gamers: GTA VI launch week runs straight into Black Friday, which makes this the busiest stretch of the year for game shops, accessory brands, indie studios and esports teams. If your store slows down when traffic spikes, or you cannot post restock alerts and bundles quickly, now is the time to fix it.
