## How Much Will Americans Spend Online This Holiday Season?

Adobe forecasts $275.1 billion in online spending from November 1 to December 31, 2026, up 6.7% year over year, according to its [September 28 release](https://news.adobe.com/news/2026/09/adobe-us-holiday-shopping-season-to-hit-record). Cyber Monday stays the single biggest day, but Black Friday is growing faster at 9.2%.

Deloitte's [September 10 forecast](https://www.deloitte.com/us/en/about/press-room/deloitte-forecasts-holiday-retail-sales.html) measures a longer window, November 2026 through January 2027, and expects US ecommerce sales of $316.1 billion to $318.9 billion, up 7.5% to 8.4%. Total holiday retail sales are forecast to grow only 4.0% to 4.8%, so online is growing roughly twice as fast as retail overall.

### Where the deepest discounts land

Adobe expects discounts to peak during Cyber Week, with electronics up to 30% off, toys up to 29% and TVs, computers and apparel up to 23%. Earlier in the season the deepest discounts are smaller: up to 14% in early November and up to 21% just before Thanksgiving. If you plan to compete on price, plan your deepest offers for Cyber Week.

## What Is Different About the 2026 Holiday Season?

### AI shopping assistants are now a real traffic source

Adobe forecasts that AI-referred traffic to US retail sites will rise 130% year over year this season, with the biggest jump on Thanksgiving at 159%. [Shopify's 2026 Global Holiday Retail Report](https://www.shopify.com/news/agentic-holiday-2026) found that 65% of shoppers plan to use AI for at least one shopping task this season, while only one in three trusted an AI agent to buy on their behalf. In practice, AI is doing the research and comparison, and your product pages still have to close the sale.

Google also launched [Universal Cart](https://amvprosox.com/blog/google-universal-cart-ucp-checkout-merchants) on October 15, which lets US shoppers save products from many stores in one cart across Search and Gemini, track prices and check out with Google Pay. That makes your Merchant Center feed as important as your homepage this year.

### Mobile and buy now, pay later keep growing

Adobe expects 57.4% of holiday online spending to happen on smartphones. Buy now, pay later is forecast to drive $21.3 billion in spending across the season, including $1.09 billion on Cyber Monday and $807 million on Black Friday, with 82% of BNPL spending happening on mobile.

### Social and affiliates are taking a bigger share

Adobe expects the share of revenue driven by social media to rise 17% and affiliates and partners to rise 12%, while paid search grows 4%. Within affiliates, Adobe says cashback and rewards partners hold a 36% share and influencers and creators 22%. That means more shoppers landing deep on product pages from links you do not control.

## What Black Friday Cyber Monday 2026 Means for Your Online Store

The numbers point to one conclusion for US small and mid-sized stores: the shoppers are coming, but they will judge you faster and on more surfaces than before. A shopper might find you through ChatGPT, save your product in Google's cart, compare prices on their phone and pay with BNPL, all before seeing your homepage.

That is why I focus pre-peak work on the basics that every channel depends on: fast mobile pages, accurate product data, a checkout with the payment options people expect, and tracking you can trust. A store that gets those right can capture AI-driven and social traffic without a bigger ad budget. A store that gets them wrong pays for clicks that never convert.

### The website checklist I use with US clients

Here it is, ordered by impact. Most stores can finish it in two to three weeks if they start now.

- **Test speed on a real phone.** With nearly six in ten dollars spent on mobile, check your top product and collection pages on a mid-range Android phone over cellular data. Remove apps and scripts you no longer use, compress hero images and fix slow interactions. My [Shopify speed optimization checklist](https://amvprosox.com/blog/shopify-speed-optimization-2026) walks through the fixes, including slow interactions.

- **Turn on express wallets and BNPL.** Make sure Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal show at checkout, and that your BNPL provider's messaging appears on product pages and in the cart, not only at the final step.

- **Load test checkout and promotions.** Place real test orders with every discount type you plan to run, including stacked codes, free shipping thresholds and gift with purchase. On WooCommerce, confirm your host can handle a traffic spike and that caching does not show stale prices or cart totals.

- **Clean up product data for AI and Google.** Fix Merchant Center disapprovals, fill in GTINs, sizes, materials and use cases, and make sure prices and stock sync quickly. AI assistants and Google's cart read this data, not your banner graphics.

- **Add or fix structured data.** Product, Offer, shipping and return policy markup should match what the page says. Mismatched prices between schema, feed and page are a fast way to lose Shopping visibility.

- **Make shipping cutoffs and returns obvious.** Publish last-order dates for Christmas delivery, holiday return windows and gift options on product pages and in the cart. AI agents and shoppers both look for these answers.

- **Fix tracking before you spend.** Confirm conversions reach Google Ads, Meta and your analytics, and move to server-side events where browser pixels miss orders. Shopify merchants should also finish the [script tag and pixel migration](https://amvprosox.com/blog/shopify-script-tag-deprecation-pixels-migration).

- **Prepare landing pages for social and affiliate traffic.** Shoppers from creators and cashback sites land on product pages, so make sure those pages show the offer, reviews, delivery date and payment options above the fold.

- **Freeze code and back up.** Set a code freeze from about November 20 to December 1, take full backups, and keep a rollback plan for your theme and plugins.

### A simple timeline to follow

| When | What to finish |
| --- | --- |
| By November 6 | Speed fixes, app cleanup, Merchant Center and structured data fixes |
| By November 13 | Wallets, BNPL messaging, shipping cutoffs, landing pages for promotions |
| By November 20 | Discount testing, tracking checks, load test, backups, then code freeze |
| November 26 to 30 | Monitor uptime, checkout errors, stock levels and ad spend daily |
| December 1 onward | Review results, keep shipping cutoff messaging updated, plan January fixes |

## Frequently asked questions

### When is Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2026?

In the United States, Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026, Black Friday on Friday, November 27 and Cyber Monday on Monday, November 30. Adobe defines Cyber Week as the five days from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday and forecasts $47.5 billion in US online spending across those days, up 7.4% from last year.

### How much will shoppers spend on Cyber Monday 2026?

Adobe forecasts $15.1 billion in US online spending on Cyber Monday 2026, up 6.2% year over year, which would keep it the biggest online shopping day of the season. Black Friday is forecast at $12.9 billion, up 9.2%, and Thanksgiving at $6.9 billion. Buy now, pay later is expected to pass $1 billion on Cyber Monday.

### How early should I prepare my website for Black Friday?

Start at least four weeks before Thanksgiving. Speed fixes, product data cleanup and checkout testing take time, and you want everything finished and tested before a code freeze around November 20. Changes made during Cyber Week are risky because any bug hits your highest-traffic days and is harder to roll back without losing sales.

### Will AI shopping assistants affect my holiday sales?

Probably, in discovery more than checkout. Adobe expects AI-referred traffic to US retail sites to grow 130% this season, and Shopify's research says 65% of shoppers plan to use AI for at least one shopping task. Clear product data, honest reviews, visible policies and accurate structured data make it more likely assistants recommend your products.

## Make This Your Smoothest Peak Season Yet

The 2026 forecasts are strong, with online sales growing far faster than retail overall. The stores that win will not necessarily have the deepest discounts. They will have fast mobile pages, accurate data that AI and Google can read, a flexible checkout and tracking that shows what actually worked.
